This Shahi Mosque is steeped in a history that not only goes back over 600 years but is also considered a living monument by the Department of National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities, Government of India. It is said that this mosque of the martyrs was built in Malab village in Mughal Sali, which at that time was the largest mosque in the whole of Haryana district. The district later was named after Prophet Noah/Nuh (عَلَیهِ السَّلام) and it is how the name Nuh enters the mosque’s complete name.
When you see the mosque it reminds you of the stunning mosques of Delhi, Lahore, Agra and Bahawalpur. The mosque also invokes a sense of awe & history as some of it reminds you of monuments such Taj Mahal and others such monuments spread all over the Indian Subcontinent.
The people of this zone of influence, know it by the name of Shahi Masjid and Eid Gah. It is believed that this mosque was completed in its current character in the late 17th century with the help of His Royal Highness Nawab General Mohammad Aamir Khan the first ruler of the Princely State of Tonk. The mosque has three big domes, two minarets and a very large area.
The history of the mosque is linked to India’s first and earliest freedom struggle from the British injustices. The people of Mewat used to sit here and make their plans in support of His Royal Highness Nawab Mohammad Aamir as they planned how to free India from British injustices.
Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan, who is 99 years old has been in service of this mosque for most of his life and has witnessed and shared stories at the mosque of many major figures of the India & Pakistan Independence such as the founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah, founder of modern India Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Louis Mountbatten the last Viceroy and Governor-General of India, the great poet of the east Sir Muhammad Iqbal, the renowned Scholar Mawlana Imam Syed Hussain Ahmad Madani who Miyan Ji Muhammad Ramzan personally served and along with others.
Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan told us that his Parivar meaning family used to look after this mosque during the time of independence of the country. When Pakistan was divided from India in 1947, some of Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan’s Parivar meaning family took with them a copper plate belonging to this mosque. The copper plate contained the founding information of the mosque’s history including who built it. This copper plate that recorded the foundation now resides somewhere in Pakistan.
Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan went to Pakistan to look for the copper plate and was sad to discover that the copper plate was sold on the market. The copper plate is an item that we intend to find in Pakistan and return to our mosque in India with the help of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) inshallah.
There is also a mausoleum next to this mosque for Wali-u-Allah Syed Jafar Shah and another wealthy Muslim who was famous by the name of Mir’ Khan. Both of whom spent their lives worshipping and in service of this mosque.
It is said that Wali-u-Allah Syed Jafar Shah approached near the end of his life, Wali-u-Allah Syed Jafar Shah asked Mir’ Khan to assume back the ownership of this mosque as the land belonged to the family of Meer Khan. However, out of humility, Mir’ Khan refused to assume ownership of this mosque & land. The reason stated by Mir’ Khan was that he felt that after experiencing first-hand, the Imaan (faith) with which Wali-u-Allah Syed Jafar Shah served the mosque & the community, it took away from him (Mir’ Khan) the feeling of being an owner of any worldly property and replaced it with feeling of being nothing more than a simple fakir and a beggar, who needed to beg Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) forgiveness to be admitted into the Kingdom of Heaven.
This is why even though the mosque was built by the family of Mir’ Khan on family property; however, the ownership of this mosque was never assumed by Mir’ Khan or his family. Eventually, this mosque and the land associated with the mosque was made a public waqf. This tradition has been carried through by all the families who have taken care of this mosque including the family of Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan. As such the mosque has been associated with symbols such as freedom, Justice, friendship, sincerity, humility, piety, generosity, worshipping God Almighty and spirituality.
Presently this mosque is with the Central Waqf Council which is an Indian statutory body established in 1964 by the Government of India under the Indian Waqf Act, 1954, which established what is known otherwise colloquially as “Waqf Board”. This Waqf is dedicated to the movable or immovable assets for religious, pious or charitable purposes as recognized by Islamic Law, that are given away by philanthropists. The grant that comes as a result is known as mushrut-ul-khidmat, which seeks to promote to bring about a feeling of brotherhood and generosity. The person who dedicates their service to this establishment is known as “Wakif”, an acknowledgement of the person’s enlightenment.
We have an Imam of the Waqf Board, and its supervision is being done by Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan who is among the Khulafa of the late Mawlana Syed Hussein Ahmed Madani.
Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan has been associated with Jamiat Ulema Hind for a long time. Miyan ji Ramzan Muhammad Sahib has supervised this mosque with his own eyes since the time of the independence of the country. Not only Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan has witnessed all the personalities who were part of the Indian Movement for Freedom but is the longest reigning servant / Khadim of this mosque.
Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan tells us how during the early years there used to be a lot of violence around here and people were afraid to come to the mosque which later changed. Since that time, Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan has been observing Ramzan, tarawih, Friday prayers and Eid Prayer in this mosque & been looking after the mosque. As such is not only a mosque but also an Eidgah.
Right now, a Madrassa is also run here by Miyan ji Muhammad Ramzan and his family. The Madrassa is also known as Jamia Islamia Faizul Uloom Shahi Masjid Eid Gah.
